SENATOR THE HON ROD KEMP
Minister for the Arts and Sport

Media Release

Spotlight on regional arts in the Northern Territory

Alice Springs, Katherine and several other regional Northern Territory communities will benefit from more than $90,000 in arts sponsorship through the Commonwealth Regional Arts Fund
2001- 2002.

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today praised organisers of the
18 cultural projects to benefit from this round of funding. Many of the projects showcase young
and emerging artists and support Indigenous arts development.

'It is rewarding to see this program working so well throughout regional parts of Australia--
especially in the Northern Territory, where the vast distances can be a unique challenge
for arts development,' Senator Kemp said.

'The diversity of these projects is also very impressive. They range from contemporary music development, festivals, craft and literary events through to performing art productions and activities for the Year of the Outback.'

The Regional Arts Fund provides funding directly to the Northern Territory Government, administered through the Territory's existing Arts Sponsorship program. An independent panel of representatives from the Northern Territory's arts community assesses the applications.

'Having the applications assessed in each state and territory ensures the projects are relevant to the local community and, judging by the high calibre of projects funded in this round, this approach is working extremely well.'

Since it was established in 1996, the fund has provided $12.5 million to regional arts in Australia, and will allocate a further $7.6 million over the next three years. The Northern Territory received $215,000 from the 2001-2002 Regional Arts Fund.

'The Regional Arts Fund is instrumental in fulfilling the Government's vision of providing more arts opportunities outside capital cities,' Senator Kemp said.

A summary of the cultural projects to receive funding is attached. Further information is available about the arts projects in the Northern Territory at www.nt.gov.au.
