Freedom of Information
Introduction
Under the
Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the FOI Act), members of the public can seek access to documents and files held by the Department. The objects of the FOI Act are to give the Australian community access to information held by the Government of the Commonwealth, by:
- requiring agencies to publish the information; and
- providing for a right of access to documents.
How to make a Freedom of Information application
Applications for access to documents do not need to be in a specific format or on a special form, but must:
- be in writing
- state that the request is an application for the purposes of the FOI Act
- provide enough information to enable the Department to identify the documents being sought; and
- provide details of how notices under the FOI Act can be sent to the applicant.
