The department procures a range of goods and services from external providers and all of this procurement is undertaken in accordance with the Commonwealth Procurement Guidelines.

Value for money is the core principle that is applied to all procurement activity by the department. To ensure that value for money is achieved, the department:

• encourages competition
• promotes the use of resources in an efficient, effective, ethical and economical way 
• makes decisions in an accountable and transparent manner.

The department places all open tender opportunities on the Australian Government Electronic Tender System (AusTender) at www.tenders.gov.au and potential tenderers can locate business opportunities for the department via this site. The department also reports all awarded contracts greater than $10 000 on AusTender.
