The Satellite Phone Subsidy Scheme

The Satellite Phone Subsidy Scheme is an Australian Government initiative to help people living or working in the most remote parts of Australia purchase satellite mobile phones. The Scheme was scheduled to conclude on 30 June 2009 with applications closing on 3 April 2009. On 5 March 2009 the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy External linkannounced the enhancement of the Scheme and its extension until June 2013.

Information for phone purchasers

  • Eligible consumers include individuals, small businesses, community groups, not-for-profit organisations, Indigenous corporations, emergency service organisations, health organisations and educational institutions.
  • Eligible applicants must spend 180 days over a two year period outside of terrestrial mobile phone coverage.
  • The application must be approved before the phone is purchased. Note: The subsidy is paid to dealers, who deduct it from the retail price of the phone to consumers.

Information for phone dealers

Dealers wishing to participate in the Scheme are required to complete the Satellite Phone Dealer Agreement which will allow registration for a four year period to the end of the scheme.

Am I outside terrestrial mobile phone coverage?

Coverage maps provided by carriers provide more detailed information on 3G and GSM mobile phone services in Australia.
