Broadband allows users fast, 'always-on' online access to digital content, applications and a range of services, some or all of which can occur simultaneously. Broadband access will allow users to take full advantage of new communication tools and next generation applications.
An extensive review of broadband policy has been undertaken over the last five years. This has included the Broadband Advisory Group process, the
Regional Telecommunications Inquiry, the
House of Representatives' Inquiry into Wireless Broadband Technologies, and the
Higher Education Bandwidth Advisory Committee process. Funding of $142.8 million over four years was provided in response to the independent Regional Telecommunications ('Estens') Inquiry for a number of programs to address the bandwidth needs of regional, rural and remote areas. The Department has also worked cooperatively with all state and territory governments to adopt a coordinated approach to broadband development.
