International cooperation

Access

APEC is assisting in expanding telecommunications infrastructure in developing countries in the region. The Department's International branch is assisting in this process through projects with the TEL Development Steering Group, as well as other organisations, including the ITU, the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity and the South Pacific Forum.

e-Commerce

e-Commerce is a key to growth of the Asia-Pacific trading network and the Department assists its neighbours with cooperative projects and activities, including through the APEC TEL Security and Prosperity Steering Group. The TEL assists our trading partners to expand business opportunities, reduce costs, increase efficiency and facilitate the greater participation of small business in global commerce.

APEC's work program on electronic commerce will help in global expansion of electronic commerce activities by:

  • promoting e-commerce for use by business and consumers;
  • contributing to the harmonisation of the region's e-commerce policies;
  • enhancing the development of e-commerce infrastructure; and
  • facilitating the electronic delivery of government services.

Security

The Department is cooperating with APEC to increase consumer confidence in the security of the online environment. Security work is undertaken by the TEL Security and Prosperity Steering Group

Capacity building in the region

The Department promotes staff development within the APEC region through a range of human resource development activities. These activities can be conducted through each steering group depending on the subject with the aid of the Telecommunications and Information Working Group.
