Indicative location of remote Indigenous communities to receive community phones

The attached maps have been provided to give respondents to this Expression of Interest a guide to the location of remote Indigenous communities that will be eligible to receive community phones. The maps are indicative only and are subject to the following caveats:

  1. The communities have been identified using the Australian Bureau of Statistics Community Housing and Infrastructure Survey (CHINS) 2001 data set. It is expected that the final list of communities eligible to receive community phones will be identified from the CHINS 2006 data set soon. These may differ from the communities identified in these maps.
  2. The maps do not include the names of communities. It is expected that these will be made available soon. The CHINS 2006 data will be the applicable data set used for the purposes of the BIA Telephones element.
  3. The maps show a total of 404 remote Indigenous communities with permanent dwellings and populations of less than 50 without access to a payphone or community phone. Indicative CHINS 2006 data identifies 290 such remote Indigenous communities without pay phones and a further 110 that did not state whether or not they had payphones and will need to be surveyed further.
  4. Terrestrial and non-terrestrial infrastructure has been determined on the basis of information provided by registered carriers and Departmental research. The Department does not warrant the accuracy of the maps. For example, some remote Indigenous communities may be incorrectly shown as not having terrestrial infrastructure. Respondents to the EOI should not assume the information is accurate.
  5. The planned roll out of new telecommunications infrastructure, both through government programs and new projects undertaken by carriers, has also not been incorporated into the maps. Such programs may allow access to terrestrial infrastructure to some communities identified in these maps in the short to medium-term.
