Nonprofit organisations are increasingly using ICT to make their operations more efficient, to better connect with their clients and members, and to work together to improve their communities. The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) works in partnership with nonprofit organisations, State and Territory governments to raise awareness of the new opportunities online technologies present to the nonprofit sector.

The nonprofit sector in Australia plays an important role in developing Australia's economy and social wellbeing. As part of broader civil society the sector makes a significant contribution to the social and political sphere. The sector includes over 700 000 nonprofit organisations, 100 000 incorporated associations and 10,000 companies limited by guarantee.

DBCDE seeks to promote the economic and social benefits of effective use of ICT by publishing research and through involvement in conferences and seminars.

The nonprofit sector is taking a leading role in promoting digital inclusion. Nonprofit organisations:

• provide a supportive environment for their clients to acquire ICT skills and confidence
• are uniquely placed to further extend the economic and social benefits of ICT to their members, active volunteers, the people they serve and the wider community.

ICT enables nonprofits to improve their capacity through:

• increased organisational efficiency and productivity
• increased visibility and opportunities to engage with government, the private sector and the community
•  improved capacity to raise funds - the business community contributes to the sector through corporate giving, or corporate social responsibility.

Community Portal
The Community portal is a conduit or linking site for all Australians, to websites which support, encourage, facilitate, promote or are involved in general and specific community issues, concerns and activities. The range of subjects covered is constantly growing as the site allows members of the public to actively suggest new sites which are then considered and linked to if appropriate.

This site is an interactive electronic clearing house for everyone involved in community level social, economic and environmental renewal including community leaders, community & government workers, volunteers, program managers, academics, policy makers, youth and seniors.

CASE - Computing Assistance Support and Education
CASE was formed to assist Australian individuals and community organisations in making better use of information technology to accomplish their goals. CASE offers education, advocacy and technical assistance.

Community Information Strategies Australia (CISA) Inc 
CISA has operated in SA for more than 22 years, providing information management and technology consultancy services to community organisations, the Common Knowledge and CommunIT projects:

• Common Knowledge provides a single access point for South Australian communities to share information and improve knowledge about the community services sector in South Australia
• CommunIT provides information, ICT training, access to resources and discussion forums as strategies in developing cost-effective ICT solutions for agencies working in the community sector

Donortec
Donortec aims to assist charities and non-profit organisations with donated software and hardware at low or discounted fees in conjunction with donor partners (Microsoft and Cisco).

 Infoxchange Australia
Infoxchange Australia is a nonprofit organisation working in the welfare sector. Infoxchange provides the  Infoxchange Service Seeker (ISS), directory of community services, and are developing a total service offering for nonprofit organisations. This means bundling everything needed to use ICT and get online, from acquiring PCs through Green PC, training, ICT help and support and online access through the Infoxchange Internet service provider (ISP).
