The Australian Government announced the IT Training and Technical Support Program on 6 May 2004 as part of its response to Recommendation 5.4 of the
Regional Telecommunications Inquiry.
The program provided $8.2 million for basic IT training and technical support for people and organisations in very remote areas of Australia (as defined by the Accessibility Remoteness Index of Australia developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics).
Nine projects received funding ranging from $350 000 to $2.9 million:
At the end of the program in December 2007, almost 16 500 people in 550 very remote communities received almost 110 000 hours of basic ICT training and/or technical support services.
