We are working with others to develop a vibrant, sustainable  and internationally competitive broadband and communications sector which  promotes the digital economy for the benefit of all Australians.

Message from the Secretary

Strategic Directions 2008−10 is a statement of the  Departments strategic and key business priorities over the next three years.

We are committed to being forward looking and our priorities  will evolve in line with new directions from the Australian Government and  emerging technologies.

Our key priorities: what we will achieve

The National Broadband Network

We are working on the delivery of a high-speed National  Broadband Network to 98 per cent of Australian homes and businesses. We are  also committed to initiatives that enhance broadband services for remote areas.

Cyber-safety and security

We will increase awareness and education and undertake  research and consultation to inform policy and deliver programs that better  protect Australian internet users.

Transition to digital television

We will coordinate the transition from analog to digital  television. We will ensure that people in metropolitan, regional and remote  areas of the country are prepared for the transition.

Broadcasting

We will implement effective policies and regulation to  maintain a vibrant broadcasting sector that will deliver high quality radio and  television services for all Australians. A critical task is the transition to  digital television.

Communications

We will improve communication services for all Australians  including those living and working in regional, rural and remote Australia.

Spectrum management

We will work with the Australian Communications and Media  Authority and industry to maximise the efficient management and utilisation of  national radio frequency spectrum assets to meet the needs of industry and  maximise the benefit to Australian consumers.

Digital economy

We will work to further develop Australias infrastructure,  confidence, skills and regulatory settings so that all Australians are able to  take full advantage of economic, educational and social opportunities offered  by the digital economy.
