Project achievements
Together with the NSW Department of Health, the Greater Southern Area Health Service has upgraded broadband infrastructure and rolled out clinical applications to 45 public hospitals and healthcare facilities in its region. The Greater Southern Area Health Service covers a geographic area of 166 000 sq km and has a population of 468 000.
A number of hospitals in this region, including the Albury, Deniliquin, Goulburn, Griffith, Queanbeyan and Wagga Wagga hospitals, have benefited from investment in network upgrades and the deployment of innovative e-health applications. These online capabilities have vastly improved the accessibility of patients to timely and high quality treatment.
This project, along with the Greater Western Area Health Service, Hunter New England Area Health Service and North Coast Area Health Service Clinical Outreach Programs, cover 90 per cent of the geographic area of New South Wales.
The Clinical Outreach Program has delivered infrastructure and technology at 45 sites to support the following healthcare applications:
- Electronic Medical Record
- Picture Archiving Communication System/Radiology Information System
- Mental Health Remove Video Conferencing
These applications have contributed to a significant improvement in patient care by providing faster diagnosis and have eliminated unnecessary patient travel. They have also contributed to the remote assessment and management of mental health patients in regional and rural NSW.
The project was awarded a Chief Executive commendation for innovation and patient care, as well as winning an Australian Telecommunications User Group (ATUG) award for its innovative utilisation of telecommunication (broadband) technology in an enterprise environment.
