Project achievements

This project has delivered specialist trauma and critical care support from major Melbourne hospitals and Bendigo Health to regional hospitals in Echuca, Mildura and Swan Hill in the Loddon Mallee region of Victoria.

This was achieved by using the latest development in virtual clinical care—the Virtual Trauma and Critical Care Unit (ViTCCU). The Loddon Mallee sites (Bendigo, Echuca, Mildura, Swan Hill) are connected by a new Loddon Mallee Health Alliance data network and then to the Alfred, Austin, St Vincents and Royal Childrens Hospitals in Melbourne. From a Melbourne site, a specialist can now offer advice to the regional site on the best clinical intervention needed to provide quality care to the patient. The introduction of ViTCCU into emergency rooms has provided improved patient care as well as communication and development between health care staff.
