ICT Centre of Excellence Advisory Panel

An Advisory Panel of eminent researchers and business people was appointed to oversee the establishment of the Centre. Following consultation with stakeholders, the Advisory Panel developed the application guidelines.
The Advisory Panel assessed the applications and made a recommendation to the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, and the Minister for Education, Training and Youth Affairs, who jointly decided on the operator of the Centre.
In April 2002 as a result of the passing away of Mr Norman McCann (Chair until March 2002), Mr Neville Stevens was appointed to the position of Chair of the Advisory Panel. In a media statement, the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts Senator Richard Alston said that, "the Australian Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector has lost a great friend and advocate".

The Advisory Panel was assisted in the assessment of the applications by a number of internationally renowned ICT researchers. The International Advisers attended the interviews with the short listed applicants between 2-5 April 2002. These International Advisers provided a global perspective through their extensive experience in managing world class research facilities to the ICT Centre of Excellence assessment process. The Advisory Panel finalised its report in late April 2002. Ministers made their decision and announced on 22 May 2002 that National ICT Australia was the preferred applicant to establish and operate the ICT Centre of Excellence.
