2008 program participants

2008 program participants (l-r) Anthony Voutas, George Pulley, Amy Richards, Thomas Novak and Benjamin Smith

Name: Thomas Novak

College: Carroll College (Broulee)

I applied for the Year 12 Graduate Program to learn more about the Australian Public Service.  During my first rotation, I worked in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Strategy area, providing policy advice and support towards the development of an ICT sector.

So far I have gained invaluable experience in the Department, developed fundamental skills for life and most importantly, I’ve established a strong network of incredible people who can give me support and direction for my future decisions.

Name: George Pulley

College: Lake Ginninderra College

I was unsure of what I wanted to do after I finished Year 12 at Lake Ginninderra College. The program seemed interesting, at the forefront of new technology and well paid so I applied.

My first rotation in the Parliamentary Liaison section introduced me to the inner workings of government—from minutes to Cabinet tabling, and Ministerial correspondence to Senate Estimates.

The program has given me a good choice of career options, and if all goes well, next year will see me working full-time and studying part-time at uni.

Name: Amy Richards

College: Hawker College

I applied for the Year 12 Graduate program so I could have a full-time job in my gap year. However, I gained much more than just a job! The program has given me a foot-in-the-door to the Australian Public Service, with support and training to guide me along the way.

At the end of the year I plan to start a university degree, but also continue to work at the Department. The work and people have enticed me to stay and the offer of Studybank to support my tertiary education is definitely a bonus.

The Year 12 Graduate Program has been thoroughly enjoyable as I have not only gained experiences but friendships, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Name: Ben Smith

College: Lake Ginninderra College

After 13 long years of school I decided it was time to have a break. The program sounded like a great opportunity—a year off school while earning good money to save for future travel, as well as the prospect of being able to go to uni after a year of work.

My first rotation was in Finance and Budgets, where I met some wonderful people and learned a lot. I have made a heap of friends and a great foundation for my career.

Name: Anthony Voutas

College: MacKillop Senior College (Port Macquarie)

A family member recommended doing a Year 12 Graduate Program and my interest in information technology attracted me to the Department. I’ve deferred a spot at university, and I am gaining valuable experience in an office environment while saving money to ease financial pressure in the years of study to come.

The program is an excellent way to get a foot-in-the-door in terms of a career in the public sector. The working conditions are excellent, the people are approachable and friendly, and there is a wide support network. While the program is not as exciting as travelling to Europe, or as relaxing as playing video games, it is one of the smartest and most interesting things you can do in a gap year.

Name: Nicholas Wiggins

College: Daramalan College

I joined the Year 12 Graduate Program because I wanted to gain experience in the workforce before studying at university. I chose this Department because I had enjoyed a course at school that involved learning about broadband and internet connections.

My first rotation in the Department was in the Broadband Infrastructure branch. The technical understanding and friendships I gained there have made the program worthwhile. The program is a great way to get experience in an office environment and learn important life skills at the same time.
