When will I know if I’ve made it to the job offer stage?

All applicants will be notified if they are successful or unsuccessful by the end of January 2009, at the latest.

What should I do to prepare for the ability test?

The test is designed to assess your ability to work in an administrative role. There isn’t any preparation you can do—just relax and try your best.

Where will I be working?

All positions will be based in our Canberra offices at Forrest. You will be able to experience a variety of work areas throughout the program.

If successful, when would I start?

All positions will start in February 2009.

How many positions are there?

There will be at least six positions available for 2009. This is why we need all applicants to go through a competitive selection process.

Is it a permanent job?

Yes, if successful, you will be offered a permanent job in the Department. You will be on probation for the duration of the program during which time your work performance will be assessed. On successful completion of the program you will continue as a permanent employee at the APS1 level, unless you secure a higher level position.

Do I have to have a medical check?

Yes. A Commonwealth medical clearance is a standard condition of employment in the Australian Public Service. The medical clearance confirms you are fit to work in the Department. Only those successful in the final recruitment stage need to undergo a medical check.

Do I need to have a security clearance?

Yes, you will be given a security clearance package to complete when you start the program.

Can I apply if I am not an Australian Citizen?

To be eligible for employment in the Australian Public Service you must be an Australian citizen.

What would be my starting salary?

You would be offered a starting salary at the APS 1 level which is currently $36 892.

If I am not successful, will I be told why? Will I get feedback?

Applicants who are successful in making it to interview will be provided with the opportunity to receive feedback, whether you are successful or not. Generally this is provided over the phone or by email. If you do not secure an interview, you will receive a letter from the Department with the contact officer’s details to obtain feedback.

What if I want to undertake further study?

As an ongoing staff member you will be eligible to apply for study assistance through the Department’s Studybank Scheme. If you are given approval as a student you may also be given approval to take leave for study and/or financial assistance towards the cost of your study. For example, you may be given support to study a relevant qualification at University or CIT.

We advise that participants do not study while participating in the program as the transition to full-time work and the comprehensive program may be too much to begin with. If you feel you can cope with full-time work and part-time study, you could take up study in the second half of the program.

Will I be placed in one position for the duration of the program?

Our program is designed to give you variety. You will undertake three rotations of approximately 14 weeks across a range of divisions working in a policy, program and administrative area.

Do I obtain a qualification at the end of the program?

No, but our comprehensive and tailored training program has been developed in line with our capability framework, which is applicable across the Australian Public Service. All training that is completed could contribute to Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at university or CIT/TAFE. You would also be eligible to take up further study after completing the program with support from the Department’s Studybank program.
