What happens after the program?

At the end of the program you will be placed in an APS1 position in the Department, with opportunities to apply for higher level vacancies at the APS2 and APS3 levels. You will receive training to prepare you for applying for positions within the Department and the wider Australian Public Service.

Your development doesn’t end with the program. All staff in the Department are encouraged to work with their managers to identify areas for learning and development and actively pursue these through a range of core training courses, capability programs which build management and leadership skills, on-the-job experiences and specialised seminars that are relevant to the work we do.

We offer attractive Studybank provisions to help with future study goals where relevant to the Department’s needs so you can study and get paid at the same time!

Where are they now?

Find out about some of our past Year 12 Graduates’ experiences after finishing the program.

Name: Emily Roe

Year 12 Graduate intake: 2007

College: Erindale College

At the beginning of 2007, I was a regular teenager trying to decide whether to go to uni or get a full-time job. I made the right choice by joining the Year 12 Graduate Program, and I have since been promoted to a higher level in the Department. In my current position in the Consumer Protection area, I get to see the problems consumers can face in the telecommunications sector and I have a hand in protecting their rights.

At the beginning of 2008, I took advantage of Studybank which allows me to continue working full-time and study a Bachelor of Economics part-time at the Australian National University.

Name: Isobelle Watts

Year 12 Graduate intake: 2007

College: Narrabundah College

Life after the program has come with a different focus and presented a new set of challenges and opportunities. This year I have commenced full-time study and have continued to work in the Department’s Legal Group on a part-time basis. The combination of work and study—in Law and Economics—is challenging but valuable, and I am really enjoying both ingredients in the mix. The program gave me a solid grounding and thankfully led to flexible conditions which allowed me to pursue other endeavors.

Name: Damien Wright

Year 12 Graduate intake: 2007

College: Narrabundah College

Thanks to the program, I now have all the necessary skills to move onwards and upwards. I have recently gained a position in the Department’s new Technology Advisory Unit, focusing on remote area technologies, wireless broadband and mobile broadband. The work includes writing research reports, attending industry meetings and seminars and supporting my colleagues in broadband related matters.

Working full-time in the public service has been great—I have taken advantage of Studybank and I have begun studying IT at the Australian National University. Flextime and planned leave are great for creating three day weekends or taking an occasional holiday down the coast. The program gave me a path to full-time work and a well paying, flexible career.
