Cross-media and foreign ownership reform

At the last Federal election, the Government committed to reform cross-media ownership and media specific foreign ownership restrictions in the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (BSA), while ensuring that its reforms continue to protect the public interest in a diverse and vibrant media sector.

On 18 October 2006, the Government’s media reform legislative package was passed by Parliament. It included the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Media Ownership) Act 2006 and the Communications Legislation Amendment (Enforcement Powers) Act 2006. The Acts received Royal Assent on 4 November 2006 and the substantive provisions commenced on 4 April 2007.
