Detailed discussion papers to further inform the government's Convergence Review

The Convergence Review Committee released five detailed discussion papers today as part of the next step in their landmark review of Australian media and communications regulation.

The discussion papers focus on ‘Layering, Licensing and Regulation’, ‘Australian and Local Content’, ‘Spectrum Allocation and Management’, ‘Media Diversity, Competition and Market Structures’, and ‘Community Standards’. The discussion papers will serve as an important means for the review to further engage with interested Australians on a converging media environment.

Glen Boreham, Chair of the Convergence Review Committee, said the high number of quality submissions to the review has helped shape the content of these five critically important papers.

"We have received some very high-quality submissions from many stakeholders around Australia and these have certainly been important in the drafting of the discussion papers," Mr Boreham said.

"It has been particularly encouraging to hear from a broad range of Australians on the many issues they consider important in this review. We want more people to comment on these new discussion papers and encourage everyone with an interest in the review to contribute."

"This review is the first of its kind anywhere in the world so we want to make sure we cover all the key issues and consult across the board."

"Media and communications industries affect the lives of every Australian, and the Convergence Review will have important outcomes for our society," Mr Boreham said.
