ACT residents among the first Australians to benefit

NBN champion, CEO and Founder of Neighbour Day, Andrew Heslop, has today welcomed the release of NBN Co’s first national 12-month fibre rollout schedule for the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The schedule includes Gungahlin and neighbouring Mitchell in the ACT.

“One of the complaints I get from people coming to our website is that their connection is too slow to download the posters, flyers and other information they need,” Mr Heslop said. “The information is there but their connection is too slow.

“So one of the great things about high-speed broadband is that it will allow our website to be redeveloped into an online hub for communities across the country to not only share information but to have conversations through the online forums and videoconferencing.”

More than half a million premises across 56 Australian towns and suburbs are set to gain access to NBN fibre services under NBN  Co’s first one-year construction schedule. This includes almost 15,000 premises in these two ACT communities.

“The NBN is going to connect communities in a number of ways,” Mr Heslop said. “It will enable people to work from home which will mean our suburbs and towns will be more active and alive during week days. It will assist communities experiencing disaster to rebuild. And it will help neighbours come together through the use of social networking platforms and video-conferencing.

“More broadly, communities across the country will be revolutionised by the capacity of the NBN. Its speed will transform our learning, our discovery, our business transactions and how we connect with family, friends and colleagues.

“It will assist farmers to better manage their crops. It will allow children in urban, regional and remote communities to quickly delve into libraries and expand their horizons through the growing knowledge economy. It will allow our scientists to continue to be at the forefront of research, innovation and medical breakthroughs.

“But most of all it will bring fast, reliable and in-demand 21st century technology to all Australians where speed will eclipse distance like never before. The release of this schedule marks an important turning point for us all.”
