What does the Cybersafety Help Button do?
The Cybersafety Help Button is a short cut to help and advice for young people and families. There are times when young people using the internet need help and advice on how to handle a situation that disturbs themsuch as when they are subjected to cyberbullying, or receive other unwanted contact, or see content that is upsetting.
What help does the button offer?
Development of the Cybersafety Help Button was informed by young Australians and collaboration with industry, not-for-profit and government stakeholders. It offers a 'one-stop shop' for a range of cybersafety assistance and resources.
When a user accesses the downloaded Cybersafety Help Button while connected to the internet, it will open the cybersafety help and advice page which provides direct links to:
- Kids Help Line professional counselling services
- the pages for reporting abuse pages and the safety centres of social networking sites including Facebook, Formspring and Twitter, and online game sites including Moshi Monsters, Nintendo and Xbox
- Scam Watch to report online scams and fraud
- the Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Australian Federal Police to report inappropriate online content or unwanted contact
- cybersafety information websites, including Cybersmart and Stay Smart Online
If there is immediate danger to anyone, the user should call '000' or tell a trusted adult.
How do I download the Cybersafety Help Button?
To download the Cybersafety Help Button, first read the information on this page about the button and available download options. Once you are ready to download, visit the Cybersafety Help Button download page and select the appropriate download option. Young people should get permission from their parents or caregivers before downloading the button.

Easy installation options
1. Install on your desktop (compatible with Windows and MAC OS)
- Click the Windows or MAC OS icon. Before the download starts, a screen will pop up asking you to agree that
- the Commonwealth of Australia owns the copyright to the cybersafety help button, and
- that the Commonwealth is not liable for any loss you may incur from use of the button.
- If you want to proceed, click on 'I agree' and the download will commence and the button icon will install on your desktop.
- Upon completion of installation process, the button should launch automatically.
The button application is relatively small at just under one megabyte. It was designed that way so that it does not use too much memory on your computer.
Will it interfere with my computer or any of its applications?
The downloadable Cybersafety Help Button was designed not to interfere with your computer or its existing applications. The software was tested with common internet security products (virus scanners, firewalls, and malware detectors).
If you think that this application is interfering with software on your computer, simply uninstall it and let us know by emailing your feedback to the technical helpdesk at helpbutton@dbcde.gov.au. This will allow us to investigate whether we need to make some adjustments to the button to prevent such problems in the future.
If your computer's firewall asks you to give permission for 'cybersafetybutton.exe' to connect to the internet, please select the option that allows the connection.
If your antivirus or anti-malware program identifies 'cybersafetybutton.exe' as a potential threat and/or suggests quarantining or deleting it, please select the option that preserves the file and allows it to operate.
Can I hide the Cybersafety Help Button on my desktop?
Right-click on the button and, from the menu that appears, select 'hide when minimised'. Minimise the application to hide it in the tray. Click on the tray icon to redisplay the button.
Can I uninstall the Cybersafety Help Button?
Yes.
Windows users can uninstall the application by one of the following methods:
- Windows XP: Select Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Find the entry for 'Cybersafety help button' and click the 'Remove' button.
- Windows 7: Select the Windows icon (Start) > Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program. Find the entry for 'Cybersafety Help Button' and click the 'Uninstall' button.

2. Install on your mobile device

Download for Android devices
The Cybersafety Help Button can be downloaded from the Android Marketplace, an online software store for Android devices.
To download the application from the Android Marketplace, you must have an Android-based device.
From your device, simply visit www.dbcde.gov.au/helpbutton and click on the Available in Android Marketplace button (as seen below).
Alternatively, open the Market application on your device and search for 'Cybersafety Help Button', which will appear in your search results. Select this application.
You will proceed to the Cybersafety Help Button page within the official Android Marketplace. To install the application, simply click the 'Install' button.
You will be prompted to accept permission for the application to access phone calls (read phone status and ID) and network communication (full internet access). Select 'OK'. The application will then download. If you return to your device's home screen, you wil now see the Cybersafety Help Button icon. Click on this icon to begin using the application.
The Cybersafety Help Button requires an internet connection.

Download for BlackBerry devices
To download the application from the BlackBerry App World, you must have a Blackberry-based device (phone or PlayBook).
From your device, simply visit www.dbcde.gov.au/helpbutton and click on the Get it at BlackBerry App World button (as seen below).
You will proceed to the Cybersafety Help Button page within the BlackBerry App World. To install the application, simply click the 'Download' button and follow the prompts.
Once installed, you will now see the Cybersafety Help Button icon on your home screen. Click on this icon to begin using the application.
The Cybersafety Help Button requires an internet connection.

Download for Windows Phone 7 (WP7) devices
The Cybersafety Help Button can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Marketplace, an online software store for WP7 devices.
To download the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace, you must have a WP7 device.
From your device, simply visit www.dbcde.gov.au/helpbutton and click on the 'for Windows Phone 7' button (as seen below).¯
On the Windows Phone Marketplace page, click 'Get free application', log in and select the method for downloading the Cybersafety Help Button. You can either download immediately via messaging or you can receive email instructions on how to install the app later. Follow the message instructions and select 'allow' when prompted to give the Cybersafety Help Button internet access.
3. Install as part of your web browser
Place the Cybersafety Help Button in the toolbar on your web browser.

Microsoft Internet Explorer web slice
- Click on the Internet Explorer icon. A welcome download box will appear on your screen.
- Click 'Next', and then 'Next' again.
- Click 'Install' if you agree to Internet Explorer licence terms.
- Click 'Finish'.
You may have to restart your computer for the web slice to appear in your toolbar.
Specifications: this installation requires Windows XP, Vista or 7 operating system.
Please note: the web slice is compatible with Internet Explorer versions 8 or 9 only. If you have an older version, the installer will automatically update your browser to either version 8 (XP users) or 9 (Vista and 7 users). The web slice is not compatible with Mac OS.

Google Chrome extension
- Click on the Google Chrome icon. This will take you directly to the Cybersafety Help Button download page of the Chrome Web Store.
- Click the 'Add to Chrome' button and press 'Install'.
- The Cybersafety Help Button will automatically appear in your toolbar. Click the button to access the cybersafety help and advice page.

- Click on the Mozilla Firefox icon. This will take you directly to the Cybersafety Help Button download page of the Firefox add-ons site.
- Click the 'Download Now' button.
- The Cybersafety Help Button will automatically appear in your toolbar. Click the button to access the cybersafety help and advice page.
4. Install on your school or library network
A multiple installer for school and library (and council) servers is available for the Desktop Version (Option 1) and for the Internet Explorer web slice (Option 3).
Please email the Cybersafety Help Button help desk at helpbutton@dbcde.gov.au and request either a desktop multiple installer package or Internet Explorer webslice installer package.
The multiple installer packages will allow you to install the help button onto your server which will then place the button onto all the computers in the network.
The desktop version requires Adobe Air and is compatible with PC and MAC OS.
The Internet Explorer webslice installer package is compatible with Windows Servers 2003 and 2008, Windows XP, Vista and 7 operating systems, and Internet Explorer 8 and 9. MAC OS is not supported.

Is the button available for download from anywhere else?
You should only download the Cybersafety Help Button from this website or the official marketplaces specified for the mobile and browser applications. To prevent spoofing, do not download it or accept it from anywhere else.
As always, make sure that your computer has up-to-date security applications installeda functioning firewall, an antivirus program, and perhaps an anti-malware or anti-spyware program
What about updates to the button? How will that work?
If coding or software changes are required, you will automatically receive a prompt to upgrade as appropriate.
