Online security for home users and small businesses

The Department delivers a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing the protection of Australian home and small business users against electronic attacks and fraud. These include:

National E-security Awareness Week

The annual National E-security Awareness Week aims to help Australians understand e-security risks and educate home and small business users about the simple steps they can take to protect themselves, their families and their businesses online.

National E-security Awareness Week 2009 will be held from 5 to 12 June. Government agencies, industry and community organisations will hold a range of activities around the country during the Week. The full event schedule is available at External siteStay Smart Online.

The Government's E-security website

The Stay Smart Online website External siteStay Smart Online provides all Australian online users with information on the simple steps they can take to be secure themselves online. This includes information and advice on how to secure your computer and your transactions online.

Stay Smart Online contains a free alert service that provides easy to understand information on the latest e-security threats and vulnerabilities, a free interactive education resource for primary and secondary school students, videos with useful tips on protecting your computer, a self assessment tool for small businesses, and information for parents.

National Alert Service

A free National Alert Service is available through External siteStay Smart Online.

The Alert Service provides information, in plain English, on the latest e-security threats and vulnerabilities and how to protect yourself.

Budd:e E-security Education Modules

An E-security Education Package is being developed for Australian primary and secondary schools. The two learning modules—one for Year 3 students and one for Year 9 students—are designed to raise the level of e-security awareness of Australian school students and help them adopt smart online practices.

Australian Internet Security Initiative

The Australian Internet Security Initiative (AISI) identifies compromised computers and supports internet service providers to help their customers restore their computer security. This initiative is being delivered by the Australian Communications and Media Authority External sitewww.acma.gov.au/spam.
