On 16 October 2008, the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, announced a merit-based appointment process for non-executive directors to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) Boards and called for applications from Australians to fill four vacancies on the ABC and SBS Boards. On 27 March 2009, four new non-executive Directors were appointed�two each to the ABC and SBS Boards See the Minister�s announcement of the appointments.
