Television towers

The Australian Government made commitments during the 2007 federal election to improve digital television reception in Broadford in Victoria, Currie on King Island in Tasmania and from Craigmore to Ingle Farm on the Para Escarpment in outer metropolitan Adelaide in South Australia. The Currie commitment included improving the reception of ABC Local Radio.

Broadford, Victoria

The Broadford digital television retransmission facility is located on Mt Hickey.

The Broadford facility retransmits the full suite of digital television services including the ABC, SBS, WIN, Southern Cross and Prime’s main channels, together with digital channels ABC2, ABC3, ABC News 24 (HD), SBS TWO, ONE, GO! and 7TWO.

The Mitchell Shire Council commissioned the facility during June 2009. The council is operating this facility on a self‑help basis.

If you have any questions about the facility, such as tuning to the digital television services, contact the Mitchell Shire Council on 03 5734 6200 or send an email to mitchell@mitchellshire.vic.gov.au

Currie, King Island, Tasmania

The Currie retransmission facility is located on Tower Hill in Currie.

The Currie retransmission facility currently provides ABC and SBS digital television services including the ABC and SBS’s main channels, together with digital channels ABC2, ABC3, ABC News 24 (HD) and SBS TWO.

The Currie retransmission does not currently provide commercial digital television services. This is because these broadcasters have not yet commenced broadcasting their digital television services on King Island. These will become available on King Island by 2013—the year King Island switches over from analog to digital—from the broadcaster site on Gentle Annie Hill.

Once the commercial broadcasters have commenced transmissions from Gentle Annie Hill, the Currie retransmission facility will be able to retransmit these digital television services to the Currie community. Note: equipment is installed at the Currie site for the retransmission of the commercial broadcasters’ digital television services when they become available.

The King Island Council commissioned the facility during April 2010. The council is operating this facility on a self‑help basis.

If you have any questions about the facility, such as tuning to the digital television services or ABC Local Radio, you should contact the King Island Council on 03 6462 1177 or send an email to kicouncil@kingisland.tas.gov.au
